REPORTING TO Managing partner
WHY THS COULD BE THE IDEAL ROLE FOR YOU
1. An integrated commercial practice that generates high-quality, context-rich tax mandates, not isolated tax instructions without commercial grounding. 2. A firm actively investing in its tax capability - this is a growth hire, not a replacement, and the trajectory for the right person is clear. 3. Senior associate designation with genuine responsibility and real exposure to complex matters from day one. 4. A Johannesburg-based role within a firm whose commercial reach and client quality make the work consistently interesting.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Advise on corporate tax structuring, M&A tax implications, and commercial transaction support, working closely with the transactional and corporate teams. 2. Manage SARS disputes, objections, audits, and related correspondence, supporting senior practitioners through to tax court proceedings where required. 3. Draft tax opinions and memoranda for corporate and commercial clients - with the precision and clarity expected of a specialist tax practice. 4. Build and maintain client relationships across the tax and broader commercial practice, contributing to the firm’s growth in this area.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Admitted attorney with 8 years of post-qualification experience focused on tax law. 2. Solid grounding in corporate income tax, VAT, and at least some SARS dispute experience. 3. Ability to work independently on tax matters while operating effectively within a team-led practice. 4. Demonstrated tax drafting ability - opinions, objections, or transaction-related tax advice.
KEY SKILLS
1. Corporate tax structuring and transactional tax advisory. 2. SARS dispute management: objections, audits, and appeals. 3. Tax opinion drafting across income tax, VAT, and related matters. 4. Cross-border tax awareness and transfer pricing fundamentals. 5. Client engagement and relationship-building within a commercial practice.
CULTURE
1. Technically precise: you take the detail seriously and your work reflects it. 2. Commercially curious: you want to understand the business context behind the tax question. 3. A team player who is equally comfortable working closely with senior colleagues and managing their own tasks with minimal supervision.
